Free radicals are atoms, or molecules that typically contain one or more free electrons. This makes them aggressive substances, “seeking their victims” within the body – i.e., some substances they could combine with. They attack cell membranes, inactivate some important enzymes and deteriorate physiological functions. They can even cause damage to DNA, especially in mitochondria, which can limit their functioning and – subsequently – lead to limited functioning of the respective organ. Under normal circumstances, the production of free radicals is controlled by the anti-oxidative system, the key components of which are natural antioxidants, the enzymes superoxide dismutase and glutathion peroxidase, and also vitamin E. Their activity declines with age, which manifests itself by increased the frequency of chronic diseases, such as atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, etc. Experiments have proven that mutations, which lead to a higher production of superoxide dismutase, also concurrently prolong life.
About 15 % of the population shows a reduced level of the enzyme superoxide dismutase. These people are more endangered by the possibility of developing tumours than the rest.
